The impetus leading to 3D And Dowel’s start emanated from the desire to make vibrant and functional furniture that is no-to-low outgassing and affordable for everyday working people; to have furniture that is attractive and conforms to a clean indoor air environment. The proliferation of 3D printers together with reduced prices, increased build plate size, improved reliability, and improved filament availability has made reaching this ambition possible. A properly contained, ventilated 3D printer can now reside in just about any home setting.
Founder, Sandra James made her first table with brackets she designed in 2015. They were designed to display handicraft work as she felt beautiful crochet patterns could be integrated with furniture in a tasteful manner. The brackets are available as a free file on MyMiniFactory.com and will remain there as long as the website allows.
After purchasing her own 3D printer in 2016, Sandra learned that she could make no-to-low outgassing furniture by using PLA/PHA filament. Her first attempt at making a stool failed, but she was able to turn the failure into success as a table. This led to development of other tables and eventually a functional stool. Her trials with early furniture pieces are chronicled on her Clever Crafts blog.
